How might a steering wheel combine ergonomic clarity, technical feasibility and a distinctive design character within the interior of a new vehicle generation?
During my internship in BMW’s Detail & Interface Design team, I contributed to the development of steering wheel concepts for the BMW 1 and 3 Series.
Working alongside experienced designers, engineers and model makers, I supported the design process from initial sketches and 3D studies through clay modelling and refinement toward the final production design.
The work required balancing form, ergonomics, technical constraints and cost targets. The resulting steering wheel is defined by a compact, accessible geometry and a softly curved horizontal line that gives it a clear and recognizable character within the interior.
The design was subsequently introduced in the second generation of the BMW 1 and 3 Series.
